Buy Box

The Buy Box is the checkout panel on an Amazon product page — the area on the right with the "Add to Cart" and "Buy Now" buttons. When multiple sellers offer the same product, only one of them is featured in the Buy Box. Around 82% of all Amazon purchases go through the Buy Box. Without it, you effectively sell nothing.

Why the Buy Box decides success or failure

Amazon shows exactly one Buy Box per product (one ASIN). When multiple sellers offer the same item, they compete for that single slot. Everyone else gets pushed to "Other Sellers on Amazon" further down the page — almost no one clicks that link.

For resellers, brand owners with multiple stores and manufacturers selling through distributors, the Buy Box is therefore the single biggest lever. An ASIN where you lose the Buy Box might as well not be listed. The conversion rate of "Other Sellers" clicks sits below 1%.

How Amazon awards the Buy Box

Amazon doesn't use a single price algorithm. It weighs a combination of:

  • Price (incl. shipping): not necessarily the cheapest, but within a tight market window
  • Shipping time: Prime / FBA gets a massive boost
  • Inventory: consistently in stock beats fluctuating availability
  • Seller performance: Order Defect Rate, Late Shipment Rate, Cancellation Rate — all as close to 0% as possible
  • Account Health Score: overall seller account rating
  • Seller age: new accounts get the Buy Box less often

The algorithm sometimes rotates the Buy Box between similarly strong sellers. If your share fluctuates, that's normal — not necessarily a problem.

How to win the Buy Box

  1. Use FBA — Fulfillment by Amazon improves shipping speed and performance scores automatically. Single biggest lever.
  2. Automate price adjustments — tools like BuyBoxer, RepricerExpress or Amazon's own Automated Pricing react in real time to competitor changes.
  3. Maintain inventory — out-of-stock = instant Buy Box loss. Set inventory alerts.
  4. Reduce shipping defects — always add tracking numbers, hit ship-by promises, refund quickly on complaints.
  5. Keep Account Health high — Order Defect Rate < 1%, Late Shipment < 4%, Cancellation < 2.5%.
  6. Brand Registry — if you own the brand: apply for Brand Registry. Stops other sellers from hijacking your listing to compete for the Buy Box.

Common mistakes

  • Starting a price war — some sellers reflexively undercut. The spiral destroys margin. Exhaust shipping and performance levers first.
  • Falling out of stock — even one day out-of-stock can lose the Buy Box to a competitor for weeks.
  • Ignoring hijackers — third-party sellers piggybacking on your ASIN need to be removed via Brand Registry / test buys / Amazon Support.
  • Main Image — Buy Box is impossible if the main image violates the style guide
  • A+ Content — boosts conversion on the Buy Box page
  • Conversion Rate — what happens after the Buy Box click
